What To Expect For An ADHD Evaluation

When you notice that your child is behaving differently or struggling somehow, it can be daunting and scary. We understand how much you want to take their pain away. The issue might be that your child is suffering from ADHD. We can help. Dr. Albert Holloway from Payne & Holloway Pediatrics and his team are skilled and experienced at administering ADHD evaluations in Montgomery, AL and determining if this is the reason that your child is struggling. We will do everything possible to make the process less scary for both you and your child, starting with education as to what to expect going into an evaluation for ADHD.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

There is no single test that will lead to a diagnosis of ADHD. Our ADHD evaluation in Montgomery, AL consists of a culmination of different tests, questionnaires, and talking to different people that are in the child's life, such as teachers and other medical providers. Usually, an ADHD evaluation will last several hours. But don't let that scare you - we strive to make you and your child comfortable during this time. It helps us, too! The more relaxed a child is, the more we can gain insight into their typical and genuine behavior.

The consultation consists of several different forms of evaluation. These include:

  • Questionnaires: The crux of an ADHD evaluation is to gather as much information about your child's behavior from as many people as possible. This will involve evaluating information given to us by teachers, psychologists, coaches, etc.
  • Initial interview: This is necessary for us and the child, to get to know each other and feel comfortable with one another. You will be involved in this step as well,  to gain a thorough medical, family, and social history of your child. It is very important to disclose any other diagnoses that your child has been diagnosed with, both physical and mental.
  • Specific ADHD tests: This step varies widely based on what tests the examiner thinks will reveal the most about your child. They can include tests such as questionnaires, computer tests, intelligence tests, and the testing of specific abilities, such as hearing and visual tests, memory recall, motor skills, language development, learning disabilities, and more.

A complete assessment may require more than one visit. The diagnosis of ADHD exists on a spectrum, it is quite complex. All of the tests mentioned above may be utilized, or a combination of some of them. Once a determination has been made, you and your child's pediatrician will decide on the appropriate treatment plan for your child.
