When to Worry: Signs that Require a Pediatrician's Attention

Dr. Albert Holloway has been a pediatrician in our Montgomery, AL, office for over 40 years. Payne and Holloway Pediatrics became his sole practice in 2017 after Dr. Gillis Payne turned it over to him. Dr. Holloway is looking forward to your visit to discuss any questions you may have regarding office procedures for sick visits.

It may be hard to guess whether your child may be sick, especially when they are young. Young children can't voice how they feel, so as a parent, it's important to know when to call our doctor for an appointment.

Knowing Your Child's Normal Function

When your child is very young and unable to tell you they don't feel good, it is imperative to note how your child acts typically to determine the difference. The first signs and symptoms are related to guidelines for babies requiring immediate attention from our doctor or hospital doctor.

  • Worsening yellow-looking skin
  • Eight-plus hours since the last wet diaper
  • Nonstop, high-pitched crying for over one hour
  • High fever over 100.4 degrees
  • Refusing to eat at least two meals in a day
  • Repeated vomiting over 24 hours
  • Noticeable poor color and is unresponsive and limp

According to our highly experienced and skilled pediatrician at Payne and Holloway Pediatrics, located in Montgomery, AL, the following are signs to seek urgent medical care in older children.

  • Strange rash that appears like bleeding in the skin
  • Forced, hard breathing
  • High fever above 103 degrees
  • No urine at all for over 8 hours
  • Dry mouth
  • Limp
  • Crying with no tear production
  • Worsening stomach pain, especially on the lower right side
  • Is acting more fatigued or lethargic than seen when sick other times
  • Skin condition worsening
  • Any incidence of trauma experienced from an accident, including bleeding wounds
  • Deformed-looking bone after a fall
  • A puncture
  • An animal bite

Call our office for a scheduled visit for these non-urgent signs:

  • Fever below 100.4 for more than three days
  • Sore throat
  • Worsening ear pain
  • Mild injury with unrelieved swelling
  • Intermittent vomiting over 24 hours
